A large area of land which has been specially
converted to be used for the transport of
passengers and freight by air.The area is
surrounded by Hangers(used for the
maintainance and storage of the aircraft
using the airport),large Storage buildings(in
which the freight is kept whilst awaiting
despatch),Airline offices and the Airport
Terminal Building(through which pass the
passengers and in which they are booked on to
the correct aircraft).At International
Airports there will also be Customs and
Excise facilities at which incoming Aliens
will have their passports and luggage
checked. The area is crossed by at least two
Runways, set at an angle to each other, and
aligned in the direction of the prevailing
wind and the direction of the most common
alternative,from which,and to which,the
aircraft take-off and land.
International Airports usually have more than
this number of runways, however,to be able to
cope with amount of traffic.
The most prominant position on the airfield
is occupied by the Air Traffic Control Centre
from where the movement of traffic, both on
the ground and in the air,is controlled.
An Airfield is the term usually used to
indicate a Military airport.
